"21 Things for 21st Century Educators" Course Overview


This online course provides training for K-12 educators based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) which are standard technology skills every educator should possess. Through the 21 Things course, educators will develop their own skills, obtain SBCEUs or Graduate Credit, and discover student skills needed to meet the METS (MI Educational Technology Standards) and MI Merit Curriculum Online Exprerience requirements.

Getting Started

To prepare to take the "21 Things for 21st Century Educators" course through WISD, please read the information below and then use the link in the "Register for Course" section to complete your registration.

In the "Materials" section below you will be able to download a complete list of all assignments as well as a copy of the 21 Things portfolio worksheet that you will use to submit the screenshots of your work and your reflections on that work.

Course Schedule

Summer 2011 Session
The course will run from June 27th--August 13th, 2011.
The June 27th session is a mandatory face-to-face meeting at the WISD computer lab from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. All the rest of the course is at your own pace with deadlines for assignments.
In addition to the Virtual course recordings, open lab support sessions will be offered. Attendance at these support lab sessions is optional.

All portfolio materials must be submitted by the August 13th ending  date.
A complete schedule can be downloaded and saved to your computer. You will find this schedule in the "Materials" section below.

**Do you have to register if you are only interested in learning some of the 'things'? 
No, you do not need to register for the class to work on your own--it is available to all educators.

Complete Requirements for SB-CEUs and Graduate Credit (CMU)

SB-CEUs for this course are pending. Upon approval by the Michigan Department of Education we will be able to give 6.5 (possibly up to 12) SB-CEUs to participants who fulfill all of the requirements.

1. Download and complete the SB-CEU application form and follow the guidelines.

2. Download and complete the 21 Things Time Log of your time spent on 21 Things for the SB-CEUs.


3. Download, complete and submit (by the ending date of the session you are enrolled in) a 21 Things Portfolio Worksheet for each of the 21 Things Hands-on Activities and Assignments. The worksheets will include screen shots and reflections for each of the 21 Things. (Note: The Hands-On Activities and Assignments are found at the bottom of each web page. A complete list of the assignments is provided in the Materials section below.) The combination of your 21 Things Portfolio Worksheets and Hands-On Activities and Assignments constitute the complete portfolio that will be used to document your successful completion.

4. Upon completion of each portfolio/assignment, submit your document(s) to the course Moodle at  http://moodle.wash.k12.mi.us/test  under the assignment activity of each Thing. Please name your document as follows: lastnamefirstnamething#
The due dates are:

Summer 2011 Session

* Submit Things 1-7 by July 6, 2011
* Submit Things 8-12 by July 15, 2011
* Submit Things 13-16 by July 29, 2011
* Submit Things 17-21 by August 12, 2011

5. Complete the Course Evaluations and submit them

6. There will be a $10 processing fee for the SBCEUs.

Graduate Credit will also be offered by Central Michigan University. You can earn 1, 2, 3, or 4 graduate credits. Registration can be done by phone, mail or online. Payment to CMU will be required by early March--more details to follow. The attached syllabus will give you additional information.

**Taking this course for credit is not required. To earn the credit, however, you must register and complete the required assignments.



Course Evaluation

All participants will be required to complete an evaluation, in order to meet the SB-CEU requirements, and provide feedback and suggestions for future improvement.
